Are Boat Clubs Worth It? 3 Secrets Some Boat Clubs Don’t Want You to Know
If you’ve ever dreamed of spending more time on the water without the stress of boat ownership, you may have considered joining a Boating Club. But are Boat Clubs worth it? As a successful operator of a Boating Club in New Jersey since 2006, we’ve fielded our fair share of questions from potential members, and the answer as to whether or not a Boat Club is worth it depends on your unique boating habits, budget, and schedule. In this blog post, we’ve put together some key points that we’ve seen boaters consider as a long-standing, full-service marina on Lake Hopatcong and New Jersey’s original Boating Club.
What is a Boat Club?
First, let’s answer what a Boat Club really is. A Boat Club is a membership-based service that offers access to a fleet of boats without the responsibilities and costs of ownership. Members pay a fee that grants them access to various boats for activities like fishing, watersports, or leisurely cruises. In turn, the Club manages all aspects of maintenance, storage, and other tasks, allowing members to focus solely on enjoying their time on the water. It’s a rather simple concept, and when executed correctly, it makes boating easy, accessible, and affordable for members.
Secret #1: The Hidden Costs of Boat Club Membership
What do Boat Clubs cost? Some Boat Clubs may advertise low membership fees but fail to mention additional costs of membership, including exorbitant initiation fees, fuel expenses, cancellation penalties, or additional charges. Make sure you have a clear understanding of a Boating Club’s fee structure and what you will be responsible for paying as a member.
Boat Clubs typically charge a one-time, upfront fee when members sign up. This fee will depend on the Club’s structure, location, and more. Many franchise-model Boat Clubs (or Clubs that mimic that approach) charge a significant initiation fee of well over $4,000-$5,000, which makes the “affordability” of a Boating Club out of reach for many. At Bridge Marina, we take a different approach and believe a consistent, reasonable upfront cost is the best solution for both the Club member and the operator. We explain more about why high upfront costs aren’t great for Boat Club members in this blog post.
At Bridge Marina Boating Club, we charge a one-time onboarding fee of just $1,499, which includes private, on-water training, access to watersports gear, member events, and more. This fee helps us afford exceptional training opportunities for our members, a skilled team at the ready, and a pristine fleet of boats while keeping membership costs reasonable.
Our Boat Club membership pricing ranges from about $2,400 to $6,000 per year, depending on your selected membership level. Plus, in your first year, you’ll receive a hands-on onboarding experience, including in-depth orientation.

Secret #2: Fleet Accessibility – Can I Really Get a Boat as a Boat Club Member?
Make sure you understand how many boats you will have access to as a Club member, as well as the Boat Club’s reservation system and rules.
If a Boat Club does not offer an adequate number of boats for its membership to access, members do run the risk of not being able to reserve boats, which makes for a less-than-ideal experience.
We encourage our Club members to reserve their time in advance to secure their spot, especially on weekend afternoons, which are the most popular reservation slots. For members looking for more availability and less traffic on the water, we recommend that they try a weekday reservation when possible – an early day off work on a Thursday often makes for a perfect outing!

Secret #3: Boat Quality and Upkeep – What is the Condition of the Boat Club Fleet?
When considering your Boat Club membership, make sure you understand what boats make up the fleet. Does the Boat Club maintain them adequately? Are they newer models? Are the members sharing those boats with public boat rental customers? Some Boat Clubs may offer older or less well-maintained boats than advertised, while others may only offer a limited range of models. For example, some Boat Club fleets may be comprised of mostly pontoon boats. Unless you really love pontoons, make sure you have access to multiple boat layouts, models, and brands to ensure you get the most out of your Club membership. We suggest you visit the Boat Club’s docks to see the fleet for yourself and inspect how much care is taken to keep the boats in good, working condition. A visit also allows you to see the various boats and layouts that round out the fleet.
At Bridge Marina, we take an immense amount of pride in our Boating Club fleet, providing our members with exclusive access to a selection of pristine Starcraft Marine triple pontoons, Four Winns bowriders, and Wellcraft center console boats on Lake Hopatcong and in Highlands, NJ. Our membership also includes hands-on, on-water training with a professional instructor to ensure safety and comfort. We’re equally proud of the rave reviews and praise our members give us about the condition of our fleet.

Should I Join a Boat Club?
While Boat Clubs offer a stress-free, cost-effective way to boat, they may not be the best fit for everyone. So how do you know if a Boat Club is the right path for you? If you want to be able to boat on a moment’s notice on a vessel that’s completely customized just for you, enjoy doing your own boat maintenance and repair work, and are comfortable with the costs and commitments associated with ownership, owning a boat may be a better option. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a low-commitment, affordable way to boat, a Boat Club could be the perfect solution.
